The Cost of Living Crisis: Students and the Detrimental Effects of 'Cozzie Livs'

(me with my -1.5k overdraft)

As university students, we've all had our fair share of financial struggles, but the cost of living crisis—affectionately known as the 'cozzie livs'—has taken these challenges to a whole new level. Between skyrocketing rent prices, rising grocery bills, and the relentless pressure to keep up with academic and social obligations (Koppabergs have risen to 2 for £5.90 at Spoons *sigh*) , it's no wonder that students across the UK are feeling the squeeze.

The statistics paint a grim picture. According to recent surveys, 46% of full-time students and 44% of part-time students reported facing financial difficulties during their course. This widespread strain is reshaping the university experience in ways that are both significant and troubling. Interviews conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that students felt their overall university experience was poorer due to the rising cost of living. Many pointed out that financial stress had negatively impacted their academic performance, skills development, health, and well-being.

In practical terms, the 'cozzie livs' has forced 96% of students to cut back on spending. This means fewer nights out, skimping on textbooks, and even sacrificing essential items just to make ends meet, meaning no more sweet treat runs or no more vapes for some students. The pressure to manage finances on a tight budget is relentless, often leading to a vicious cycle of stress and academic decline.

Take, for example, Izzy, a second-year student. She shared how the rising cost of living has made her reconsider every purchase. "It has increased the amount of time I spend at home because of food costs, making me more conscious of how I spend," she said. Izzy’s story is far from unique; it's a reality for many of us trying to juggle our studies with part-time work, all while navigating the treacherous waters of financial insecurity.

The impact on mental health cannot be overstated. Financial difficulties often lead to anxiety and depression, which in turn affect academic performance and overall well-being. The ONS findings highlight that many students are struggling to maintain their mental health amidst the financial strain, which can lead to a downward spiral that affects every aspect of their university life.

But what can be done about it? While individual efforts like budgeting more strictly and seeking part-time employment can provide temporary relief, the real solution lies in systemic change. Universities and governments need to step up and provide more robust support systems for students. This could include providing free meals for those in need, increasing maintenance loans, offering more bursaries and grants, and providing affordable housing options. Moreover, there needs to be a greater emphasis on financial education. Many students enter university with little understanding of how to manage their finances effectively. Workshops on budgeting, saving, and financial planning should be a mandatory part of the university induction process. This would equip students with the skills they need to navigate the financial challenges of university life more effectively.

As we continue to grapple with the cost of living crisis, it's crucial to remember that we're all in this together; we are all feeling the tight squeeze regardless of identity or socio-economic status. Sharing our stories, supporting one another, and advocating for change can help alleviate some of the burdens we're facing. The cost of living crisis is a formidable challenge, but with collective effort and systemic support, we can work towards a more equitable and sustainable future for all students.

So next time you find yourself counting pennies or stressing over your next grocery bill, remember that you're not alone. The 'cozzie livs' might be tough, but together, we can find ways to thrive despite the challenges. Let's continue to push for change and support each other through these difficult times.

Every little helps x
